Inspire 2018

  • Lattice Optimization
    Inspire 2018 is able to fill (parts of) the structure with small beams that can vary in length and thickness to create an even lighter optimized shape.Benefits:
    • Use for implants in medical applications so that tissue and bones can grow through
    • Use for heat sink design where air can flow easily
    • Use for infills of hollow products instead of a random hatching pattern
  • Better 3D printing support
    Inspire 2018 has a number of functions to make sure created shapes 3D print well:
    • Overhang protection at a given angle
    • Lattice structure to be exported in STL
  • PolyNURBS Improvements
    It is now easier than ever to wrap a generated shape with a supersmooth PolyNURBS geometry:
    • Autofit a wrapped shape to match the optimized shape as much as possible
    • Create sharp edges
    • Create flat surfaces
    • Fillet PolyNURBS geometry to underlying geometry
  • Spreadsheet Linking
    It is now possible to link several Load Cases into a spreadsheet to quickly explore multiple strength cases.
  • Motion
    A number of improvements have been implemented in the Inspire Motion Module:
    • You can now add friction to joints
    • You can you alter Motor characteristics interactively using the new Profile Editor
    • You can now move points and geometry directly on the screen interactively
  • New Bonding options
    When creating Mid Surface Geometry for Sheet Metal Analysis you can now add Spot Welds. It is also possible to specify the weld material.
  • No Mac OS X version
    No Mac version will be developed after version 2017.1. Mac users may migrate to the Inspire Unlimited version online at http://unlimited.solidthinking.com/inspire/.

Evolve 2017

  • Symmetry - New Planar Symmetry and Radial Symmetry tools have been added to replace the Mirror and Polar Copy tools.
  • Loft and Sweep Feedback - The Loft and Sweep tools now provide additional feedback in cases of failure.
  • Length Parameter - A length parameter has been added to the Line and Rounded Polyline tools.
  • Curve Offset - When using the Curve Offset tool, you can now select surface edges directly.
  • Depth of Field - All images which are rendered inside Evolve include a Depth Channel (tiff). This Z-depth channel can now be saved in the Image Browser and used in post-processing tools such as Adobe Photoshop to simulate the natural blurring of foreground and background scene elements when viewed through a camera lens.
  • File of Import/Export - The user interface for importing and exporting IGES and STEP files has been unified and now includes the option to select either the Parasolid or the Core Technologies library. This eliminates the need for two IGES and STEP options when opening or saving files.
  • SVG Format - Evolve now supports import and export to SVG format.
  • PDF 2D Format - Evolve now supports export to PDF 2D format.
  • DWG and DXF Update - Support for the AutoCAD Drawing (.dwg) and AutoCAD Drawing Exchange (.dxf) formats has been upgraded.
  • Quick Help Link - You can now access help for the current tool by clicking the ? icon on the Control Panel.
  • Background Image - Added an option to hide the background image.
  • KeyShot Live Link - Updated the KeyShot plug-in to support Live Linking with KeyShot version 6.
 

Inspire 2017

Motion
  • Motion Ribbon - The tools on the new Motion ribbon can be used to easily mechanize your model and perform a motion analysis.
  • Ground Parts - The new Ground tool allows you to designate one or more parts that are considered to be ground and therefore immovable during motion analysis.
  • Rigid Groups - The new Rigid Groups tool allows you to group a collection of parts together so they are treated as one rigid body for the purposes of motion analysis. This allows for efficiencies when building up motion models.
  • Joints - The enhanced Joints tool allows you to connect parts together based on neighboring parts and designate whether they should be locked, active, or free. It also includes a greater variety of joint types that can be created (hinge, cylindrical, translational, ball and socket, planar) and finds more locations where joints can be placed (spherical, cylindrical, planar, and multi-planar pairs).
  • Motors - The new Motors tool allows you to drive parts in a rotational manner and define angle, speed, or acceleration with built-in profile functions. The Use Controller option helps you to better diagnose situations where mechanical lock-up or motor stalling may occur.
  • Actuators - The new Actuators tool allows you to drive parts in a translational manner and define displacement, speed, or acceleration with built-in profile functions. The Connected Parts option automatically finds connected part pairs that can be actuated.
  • Springs - The new Springs tools allow you to create coil springs and torsion springs between parts. Movement of the spring-dampers can be visualized during analysis and review of the motion results.
  • Gravity - The new Gravity tool allows you to visualize the direction of gravity in your model and reorient it using the Move tool.
  • Run Motion Analysis - You can run a motion analysis using the Quick Run button on the Analyze icon to view instant feedback on how your model moves during motion analysis. Use the Run Settings to define whether to run a static or transient analysis and to define other run parameters.
  • Review Motion Results - Motion analysis results can be played back for review. Results like forces, displacement, velocities, etc., can be plotted in a chart by clicking on an entity or selecting it from the Model Browser. A context menu on the chart allows you to export to .csv format.

Geometry Tools

  • Partitions - The new Partition tool can be used to divide a part into design and non–design regions by selecting a hole, pocket, or face to offset.

Structure

  • Bead Patterns - Bead patterns have been moved out of the Property Editor and are now a tool on the Structure ribbon. The visualization has been changed to make it clearer where the bead boundaries are.
  • Grounded Fasteners and Joints - When defining connections, you can now create grounded bolts, grounded screws, grounded pins and grounded sliding pins that act as supports in load cases.
  • Fastener Optimization - When optimizing using grounded fasteners or cylindrical supports, you can now constrain the axial and shear forces using the optimization properties in the Property Editor.
  • Connection Stiffness - You can now enable connection stiffness in the Property Editor, which allows for better approximation of axial and shear stiffness in grounded fasteners, grounded joints, and cylindrical supports.
  • Part-to-Part Contacts - Contacts can now be defined between surfaces or manually created between parts.

Evolve 2016

Modeling
  • From Center - The Rectangle, Cube, Plane, PolyCube, PolyPlane Tools now have an option to construct from the center by holding down CTRL when selecting the tool.
  • Improved Loft & Sweep tools - The updated Loft and Sweep tools offer a new feature called Auto-alignment, which lets you use profiles for reference only. The profiles and rails don't have to intersect. It comes with extra parameters that let you fully control the position and orientation of each profile.

PolyNURB Modeling

  • New Edge Bridge tool - It is now possible to bridge edges with a polygon in addition to bridging polygons.
  • Improved Face Bridge tool - Evolve will automatically figure out the shortest bridge route, you no longer have to select the connecting points.
  • New Edge Creasing tool - It is now possible to determin the curvature of the surfaces for every edge in the polynurb model independantly.
  • New Advanced Selection mode for PolyNURBS - Pick the Advanced Mode button in PolyNurb editing to quickly and interactively select a loop of edges or a row of adjecent edges.

    Also, moving of faces and edges now happen in accordance with the model orientation making it easier to stay on axis.

Model Analysis

  • New Draft Analysis tool - Evolve can now automatically calculate if products are well designed for moulding, or if any faces would need draft.

Curve Modeling

  • Improved Divide Curve tool - You can now divide a curve into separate entities while the source curve is retained in history.
  • New Intersect Curve tool - Simply select a bunch of curves and start picking segments to retain or delete. New entities will be created while the old curves remain in tact in history.

Editing models

  • Improved Rotation tool - You can now align the start angle for a rotation to any geometry snap.

New Rendering Features

  • New SnapShot feature - Quickly catch a modeling views content by clicking the snapshot icon.
  • New Pause feature for IR and Final Rendering - Click the Render Mode button again to pause the realtime rendering of your model.
  • Automatic Floor - You no longer need to draw a face to act as a floor in your rendering to catch shadows and reflections. Simply check the ‘Floor’-option in rendering background options.
  • 360° panorama render - You can now render out a panorama and also create your own HDRI image this way.
  • New Metallic Flake feature - For every plastic based material you can now enable metallic flakes and control their color, visibity, density and size.
  • New IBL format support - Choosing an IBL image instead of an HDRI image will automatically place a high resolution background image in sync with the illumiation and reflection image.
  • Image Size - You can now maintain the Aspect Ration of the output image size and you can quickly swap width and height.

User Interface & workflow updates

  • New Snapping options - Two new snaps have been added: Snap to Intersections and Snap to Midaxis.

    Snap to Endpoints, Snap to Midpoints, and Snap to Curves are now automatically activated when moving the Pivot point in the Translate, Rotate, and Scale tools.

  • Unified Spacebar/Enter usage - You can now use ENTER as well as SPACEBAR to end any command.
  • Error Feedback - When some modeling tools fail, an error icon is displayed next to the object's name in the World Browser. Hovering over the object's name in the World Browser displays information regarding the error.
  • New Lock Camera option - You can now lock a view with the click of the mouse.
  • Improved Image browser - Images in the browser now contain much more information like the render settings used to create the image.
  • Controls in the Final Render window - You can now pause the render, immediatelty click through to your image browser and it will tell you how long time the render still needs.
  • Interactive Background image controls - You can now move and rotate a background image directly in a model view window.
  • File Preview Image - A screenshot of the file is saved with the file for a quick preview in the operating system file browsers.

Inspire 2016

PolyNURBS Tools
  • Create PolyNURBS - The new Create tool allows you to quickly create free-form solid geometry that is smooth and continuous.
  • Wrap - The new Wrap tool allows you to quickly generate polynurbs geometry by clicking along the contour of your existing shape.
  • Add/Remove - The new +/- tool allows you to add a new cage to the face of an existing cage, allowing you to quickly build the basic shape of a polyNURBS object.
  • Loop - The new Loop tool allows you to draw an edge loop around a cage.
  • Bridge - The new Bridge tool allows you to connect two cages together. You can also use it to create a hole through an existing cage.
  • Sharpen - The new Sharpen tool allows you to sharpen the edges of the underlying geometry at the edge of the control cage.

Geometry Tools

  • Midsurface - The new Midsurface tool allows you to find and extract 2D sheets from single thickness thin solid geometry.
  • Mirror - The new Mirror tool allows you to reflect selected parts across a symmetry plane.
  • Scale - The new Scale tool allows you to resize selected parts.
  • Revolve - The new Revolve tool allows you to revolve a planar face around an edge, a line, or a cylindrical hole. You can also create a new part by holding down the Ctrl or Shift key as you pull.
  • Push/Pull - The updated Push/Pull tool allows you to create a new part by holding down the Ctrl or Shift key as you pull.

User Interface / Workflow

  • Section Cuts - The new Section Cut tool allows you to view 2D cross-sections of your model.
  • Move Tool - The updated Move tool features updated graphic manipulators with larger pick targets. You can also double-click to reposition the tool.

Setup Tools

  • Enforced Displacements - The new Enforced Displacements tool can be used when the magnitude of a force applied to a part is unknown, but you do know how much the part displaces as a result of that force.
  • Angular Velocity and Acceleration - The new Angular Velocity and Accelerations tool allows you to define the speed of rotation of the entire model and the axis about which it rotates.
  • g-Loads - The new g-Loads tool allows you to simulate a model undergoing acceleration, which imparts a force on all of the parts in the model.
  • Temperature Loads - The new Temperatures tool allows you to simulate the effects of temperature changes on your model.

Optimization and Analysis

  • Buckling Analysis - You can now analyze your model for buckling modes, which are used to predict when a part will bend or collapse under load.
  • Compare - The new Compare tool allows you to compare the results of analysis or optimization runs.
  • Callouts - You can now add callouts to view results at specific locations on your model.

File Input / Output

  • PDM - Inspire now allows you to open models from Teamcenter or Windchill PDM systems. It’s also possible to save Inspire models back to your PDM system.

Evolve 2015

Modeling
  • PolyMesh to NURBS Conversion - Polymesh objects can now automatically be converted to NURBS surfaces with continuity using only one checkmark!
  • All of the existing PolyNURBS tools have been improved to increase functionality and robustness.
  • Polymesh objects can be used with all surface and solid modeling tools while retaining construction history.
  • The new Edit PolyMesh tool combines vertex, edge, and face editing into one tool to simplify the polymesh editing workflow. We have added interactive controls for chamfering edges and extruding, insetting, and translating faces.
  • The new Combine PolyMesh tool allows separate polygonal objects to be combined into one single polymesh structure.
  • The new Bridge Faces tool allows connections to be made between separate faces.
  • The updated Extrude tool now allows extrusions to be applied to multiple objects in a single operation and features symmetry and extrude-to-object options. It is also now possible to extrude surface edges in addition to curves.
  • Holding down the Ctrl key while selecting the Extrude tool now activates single object mode, enabling interactive click-and-drag geometry creation.
  • The Loft tool now features vector control and new vertex placement to increase control over the surface shape, and you can swap the profiles and rails.
  • The Sweep tool now features vector control and new vertex placement to increase control over the surface shape.
  • The new Drafting View tool allows you to select groups of objects to be used in the Drawing environment.
  • The new Section View tool allows you to create and edit section views to be used in the drawing environment or visualized in the modeling windows. New section views with hatching, hidden lines, and antialiasing have been added to improve the drawing quality.
  • The new Curve on Surface tool allows curves to be drawn directly on 3D surfaces.
  • The Combine tool has been improved to create more robust geometry.
  • The workflow for the Trim tool has been streamlined so that multiple curves and surfaces can be selected in a single step, allowing you to create multiple trimmed objects in a single operation. A new option, Perpendicular to Surface, allows curves to be projected perpendicular to the surface to be trimmed.
  • The revised Face Extract tool allows you to create multiple objects in a single operation.
  • The revised Boolean Union tool automatically merges coincident faces, resulting in cleaner geometry output.
  • The Drawing environment now features section views with hatching, hidden lines, and antialiasing to improve the drawing quality.
  • The Path Cast tool is now called Curve Projection.
  • The Lathe tool is now called Revolve.

Rendering

  • The new and improved interactive rendering mode is more powerful and robust, and is now performed directly inside the modeling views.
  • Evolve's next-generation rendering engine, evoRender, features new rendering technology and a completely redesigned user interface.
  • Rendering tools are now accessible from a toolbar above the modeling views, and material, environment, and rendering properties can now be modified in the Control Panel.
  • The new Missing Texture Locator tool helps locate missing textures associated with .stl and .obj imports.
  • Evolve now supports KeyShot version 5.

User Interface / Workflow

  • The Undo command is now more robust and is applied to all intermediate steps such as point editing.
  • The redesigned World Browser uses a tab system that provides easier access to objects, layers, materials, cameras, lights, construction planes, dimensions, and drafting views.
  • Units are now displayed in the console and the Control Panel where appropriate. Values entered in different units are automatically converted to the current units.
  • When importing geometry, you are prompted to either accept the assigned units or convert to the current units.
  • You can now modify most of the standard hotkeys and assign custom hotkeys to additional functions as well.
  • The hotkeys for Translate, Rotate, Scale have been changed to W, E, and R respectively.
  • When editing polymesh objects, the A, S, and D hotkeys can be used to edit vertices, edges, and faces.
  • The hotkeys for snapping to endpoints/midpoints and snapping to curves have been swapped; they are now Alt and Ctrl respectively. To make it easier to snap to curves, snapping to tangents no longer shares the same hotkey and can be only accessed via the Snaps Toolbar.
  • Shift and Ctrl can be swapped to enable pan and zoom controls familiar to Rhino users
  • Hotkeys have been added to help you modify a selection:
    • To add multiple objects to a selection, hold down Shift and box select.
    • To subtract multiple objects from a selection, hold down Ctrl+Shift and box select.
    • To invert the selection of multiple objects, hold down Ctrl and box select.
  • There are also new hotkeys to help you select edge loops and chains:
    • When in Edit Edges mode of the Edit PolyMesh tool, hold down Shift to select an edge loop. To deselect an edge loop, hold down Ctrl+Shift.
    • These same goes for selecting or deselecting adjacent edges during the console prompt of the Loft, Sweep, and Patch tools.
  • Added onscreen feedback for snaps on mouseover to identify the available snap.
  • Right Alt temporarily resets the camera rotation axis to the position of the mouse cursor.
  • 3D Connexion mouse support has been improved to provide better control over camera rotation.
  • The Modeling Tool Panel is now called the Control Panel.

Input / Output Updates

  • 3ds Files - Updated to the most current libraries and added support for colors and textures.
  • Obj Files - Updated to the most current libraries and added support for colors and textures.
  • STL Files - Updated to the most current libraries.
  • New Evolve Bundle - When saving an Evolve model using Save As, a new option allows you to include any image files associated with the model.

Operating System & Localization

  • New 64-bit application for Mac maximizes available hardware resources.
  • The Evolve user interface is now available in English, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
  • Asian characters are now supported on Mac.
 

Inspire 2015

  • Contacts Tool
    The new Contacts tool allows users to find neighboring parts and designate whether they should be bonded, contacting, or have no contact.
  • Fastener and Joints tools
    Connect multiple parts in a model using the Fastener and Joints tools to add bolts, screws, pins, or sliding pins.
  • Gravity loads
    Gravity loads can now be added to a model through the Model Browser.
  • New ribbon-style user interface
    New ribbon-style user interface with tools organized into tabs.

Evolve 2014

User Interface / Workflow
  • Snap Controls and Hotkeys
    New snap controls have been added for bounding box center, edges, edge endpoints, midpoints, and midpoints for NURBS curves, and new hotkeys have been added: Alt+1, Alt+2, Alt+3, Alt+4 now activates corresponding grid snaps. Shift activates curve and tangency snaps. Ctrl activates endpoint and midpoint snaps.
  • Hiding and Showing Objects
    Objects can now be shown and hidden independent of their source objects in construction history when using the H shortcut or the Hide/Unhide options in the World Browser context menu. The new Alt+H shortcut can be used to show or hide source objects in construction history.
  • Isolating Objects
    The new I shortcut will hide all unselected objects. If no objects are selected, it will unhide all hidden objects.
  • Pre-Highlighting On/Off
    An option to turn pre-highlighting on or off has been added in the Preferences panel.
  • Curve Color
    Curves are now displayed as a darker value of the surface color.
  • Units Display
    Current model units are displayed in the application titlebar.
  • Background Images
    An icon to access the Background Image tool has been added in each of the modeling windows under camera controls, and parameters are now controlled using the Modeling Tool Panel.
  • Version Update Notification
    Evolve now automatically checks for version updates. You can also manually check for updates using the Help menu.

Modeling

  • Replication Tools
    The Replication tools have been updated to simplify workflow and editing.
  • Mirror Tool
    The Mirror tool has been updated, and the mirror plane is now locked to the global axis by default.
  • Round Tool
    The Round tool now features G2 curvature continuity support.
  • Deformation Tools
    The Deformation tools now have more robust editing features.
  • Area/Volume Tool
    The old volume and area tools have been combined into a new more accurate Area / Volume tool.
  • Uncombine Tool
    A new Uncombine tool has been added to split objects into separates bodies. Holding down the Ctrl key while selecting the tool will explode entities such as faces into individual objects.

Rendering

  • Keyshot Live Link
    The new KeyShot Live Link tool allows KeyShot scenes to be updated directly from Evolve.
 

Inspire 2014

  • Solid Editing Tools
    Powerful Boolean operations with instant visual feedback.
  • Geometry Simplification
    Remove imprints, rounds, fillets, holes and pockets.
  • Concentrated Mass Parts
    Create a concentrated mass either on a part or at a point in space.
  • Concept Generation
    Evaluate concepts with maximum stiffness or minimum mass.

    Investigate linear static and normal modes analysis on a model.

  • Displacement Constraints - Displacement Constraints can be applied to a model to limit deflections in desired locations and directions.
  • Extrude Draw Direction - The new extrusion shape control generates constant cross-section topologies in a specified direction.
